The process to launch the different call for the Horizon Europe programme are currently ongoing . The first Health calls will be published in April 2021.

However, there are draft programmes that provide information will be published later this spring

In addition, there is additional information about the overarching priorities that are part of the strategy. The Portuguese presidency has provided information that revitalization of the European Research Areas is a key priority. The work to revive the ERA includes activities to:

  • foster synergies between national and European funding schemes
  • promote European collaboration in research and innovation

In addition, the Portuguese Presidency has declared that digitalization remains a key priority in Europe, in particular transition across all European Regions and develop new knowledge to integrate the use of Artificial Intelligence with Green Technologies.

In terms of specific calls expected later this spring, the draft work programmes include a rather wide spectrum of different topics, such as prevention of obesity through empowering citizens to apply research based information to avoid obesity.

Other topics include calls to boost mental health across Europe. The expect call aims to improve adoption of available information and guidelines in the area of mental health. In addition, the call will address  the effects of the COVID pandemic on European mental health.

Other interesting areas include the crosstalk between health and the environment. There are topics that address the effects of pollution, electromagnetic fields and indoor environments on human health.

There are also topics that specifically address the effect of climate change on human health, other topics include antibiotic resistance (AMR) and as always there are topics which highlight the use of artificial intelligence in clinical settings.

International collaboration remains an important aspect in Horizon Europe, and there are several calls that specifically include international collaboration with non European partners and also with international authorities such as WHO.

At this stage it is important to state that the current information is available in drafts and it is open to change.
